It took me a long time to understand that the opposite of depression isn’t happiness – it’s expression. Maybe you know that feeling too? That quiet disconnect, like part of you has been muted, hidden behind routines, roles, or even just the weight of holding it all together.For me, movement, creativity, and letting go have become lifelines. There’s a freedom in expression – in dancing out the mess, in creating something beautiful (or messy!), in letting the parts of us we’ve hidden have a voice again. When we’re expressing ourselves, we’re not performing; we’re giving life to the parts of us that depression quiets.I used to think healing was about feeling happy all the time, but now I see it’s about making space for my true self, every bit of her, to show up. So, if you’re holding something back, or if there’s a part of you longing to breathe – maybe this is your nudge to let it out. It doesn’t have to look perfect, and you don’t need to have it all figured out. That being said, avoiding it is like leaving a pot to boil over - eventually the pressure will spill out uncontrollably.Know that it’s completely normal to want to avoid pain. We’ve all been there—trying to stay busy, distract ourselves, or push it away. But avoiding it doesn’t make it go away, and it’s okay if you’re not ready to face it just yet. Healing is a process, and sometimes, just acknowledging that you’re struggling is the first brave step. Just like trees shed their leaves in autumn, there are times when we need to let go of the parts of ourselves that no longer serve us. Whether it’s a habit, a belief, or even a relationship, holding on too tightly can prevent us from growing into the next season of our lives. It’s not always easy, but remember: letting go doesn’t mean losing something. It’s creating space for healing, transformation, and new beginnings.
